Tennessee State and Bethune Cookman Each Place Three Players on Steele's 2013 All-American Squad

Tennessee State and Bethune-Cookman, who battle each other in their season openers on Sept. 1, both had three players named 2013 Football Championship Series Preseason All Americans by football expert Phil Steele.

TSU tight end A.C. Leonard, left guard Kadeem Edwards and cornerback Steven Godbolt III were all first team choices by Steele, a columnist with the Orlando Sentinel.  Leonard was named to four All American teams in 2012 after hauling in 51 passes - six for touchdowns - in 2012.  Godbolt III led the FCS in interceptions last season and also was named to four All American teams. Edwards was a first team All Ohio Valley Conference pick.  Tennessee State, ranked #21 in one preseason FCS poll was the only HBCU with first team picks in the listing.  The Tigers also were the only team with more than two players on the first team.

Bethune Cookman All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference offensive lineman Terrance Hackney and 2012 All American defensive lineman LeBrandon Richardson were named to the All American second team while All-MEAC defensive back Nick Addison was a fourth team choice. 

Five Southwestern Athletic Conference players were named to Steele's squad. 

Jackson State defensive back Qua Cox, the SWAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and Alabama State punter/kicker Bobby Wenzig were both second team picks while the SWAC's leader in tackles for loss in 2012, Mississippi Valley State defensive tackle Robert Simpson, was named to the third team. Also named to the third team was Alabama State running back Isaiah Crowell. Jackson State fullback Rakeem Sims was a fourth team pick.

Julien David, Howard's All-MEAC defensive back, was named to the squad's third team.

Winston Salem State Routs Livingstone 58-0 to Stay Undefeated

   Kameron Smith threw seven touchdown passes to lead Winston Salem State, the nation's second-ranked Division II team, to a 58-0 homecoming win over Livingtone.
   In a little over three quarters of work, Smith threw for 276 yards and ran for 23 yards to keep the Rams record unblemished at 8-0, 5-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.  Backup running back Brandon McDonald added 128 yards rushing.
    Winston Salem State has won 13 CIAA games in a row and have outscored their CIAA opponents this year 212-47.
    The Rams can clinch their second straight CIAA title with a win over Shaw next Saturday.

Tennessee State Loses First Game of the Season in Overtime to Jacksonville State

    Top-ranked HBCU team Tennessee State missed a field goal at the end of regulation and another in overtime as they lost their first game of the season, 31-28 to Jacksonville State.
    Griffin Thomas hit a 44-yard field goal in overtime after TSU's Jamin Godfrey missed one on the Tigers' only overtime possession.   TSU (7-1, 3-1),who is also the nation's 17th ranked FCS team, thought they had won after Godfrey hit a 42-yard field at the end of regulation.  But an illegal motion penalty backed the Tigers up, forcing Godfrey to kick again.  He missed and the game went into overtime.
     Jacksonville State (4-3, 3-2) won their fourth consecutive overtime game.
     TSU quarterback Mike Germain finished 21-of-37 for 311 yards and three touchdowns, but also had two interceptions.  Running back Trabis Ward had another big day with 168 yards rushing and a touchdown.  He went over the 1,000 yard mark on the season as he now has 1,076 yards rushing for 2012.
     Tennessee State is still tied for the Ohio Valley Conference lead as they host Tennessee Tech next weekend.

Storied Grambling Gets First Win of the Season Over Virginia-Lynchburg

  Cedric Skinner rushed for two touchdowns while Grambling's defense clamped down against Virginia-Lynchburg to give the Tigers a 22-7 win.
    The Grambling defense gave up 109 yards rushing to Virginia-Lynchburg's Macha Shinholster, but held the Dragons to only 23 yards of offense in the second half.
   The victory was the first of the season for Grambling (1-6) who has struggled this season.

Trabis Ward, RB, Tennessee State - Rushed 43 times for 267 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-28 win over Southeast Missouri.  The 43 carries were the most this season by any FCS (formerly Division I-AA) runner. 

Clayton Moore, QB, Jackson State - Had two touchdowns and 269 yards passing as well as three touchdowns and 131 yards rushing in win over 37-34 win over Alabama State.

Antonio Henten, QB, Fort Valley State - 301 yards passing and three touchdowns in a 38-12 win over Concordia.

Alcorn State Shuts Down Deaunte Mason To Upset Undefeated Alabama A&M

      Alcorn State's defense held Alabama A&M star quarterback Deaunte Mason in check and spoiled A&M's homecoming with a 21-10 upset of the previously undefeated Bulldogs.
       Mason, who had scored at least two touchdowns passing and running in each of the last four games, only mustered one TD pass, had 158 yards in the air and threw his first two interceptions of the season.  Alcorn State (3-4, 3-2) was outgained 406 yards to 211, but avoid giving up big plays to  Alabama A&M (6-1, 5-1).
       A&M running back Kaderius Lacey scored the Bulldogs other touchdown and became the school's all-time rushing leader 205 yards on the day.

Trabis Ward's Four TD's Lead Undefeated TSU Over Southeast Missouri State

Running back Trabis Ward rushed for 267 yards and four touchdowns to power undefeated and 18th ranked Tennessee State to a 40-28 win over Southeast Missouri State.
    Ward had touchdown runs of 7, 4, 1 and 30 as he helped the Tigers (7-0, 3-0) fend off a game Southeast Missouri State (2-4, 1-2) team.  Ward's 267 yards on the ground for the game was the second-most in TSU history.  Charles Anthony rushed for 285 against Samford in 2004.
     Tennessee State is now only four FCS (Football Championship Series, which is the former Division I-AA) teams to remain undefeated so far this season.  The others are Harvard, Lehigh, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and Lehigh.

Kameron Smith Passes Undefeated Winston Salem State to Win Over St. Augustine's

     Kameron Smith shook off a fumble and an interception to pass for 347 yards and three touchdown to lead Winston Salem State to a 56-37 victory over St. Augustine's.
     St. Augustine's (4-3, 2-2) came in looking to slow down a Rams team that has stormed through their CIAA schedule so far this season.  That did not happen Saturday.
     Smith's first two possessions resulted in turnovers, including a recovery of his fumble that was run back for a Falcons touchdown and their only lead of the game.   But Smith, one of Division II's top quarterbacks, settled down to have another big day to lead the Rams (7-0, 4-0) to another easy victory.

Tuskegee Shuts Out Stillman in Big SIAC West Contest

            In a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Western Division matchup, Tuskegee shut out Stillman 16-0 on Thursday night.

            Tuskegee’ (5-1, 4-0) owned the first half as William Buford picked off a Stillman pass and returned for a touchdown and the SIAC’s leading rusher, Derrick Washington, had a 12-yard touchdown run.  Tuskegee added a field goal to close out the half.

            The Stillman offense got it together in the second half, but couldn’t cash in on red zone opportunities.  Twice they got inside the Tuskegee 20 yard line, but came up empty both times.  One was stymied by a Jamar Hornsby interception of a Joshua Straughan pass in the end zone.

            The win gives Tuskegee a leg up in a close division race.  They host Kentucky State on Oct. 18 whil  Stillman (4-3, 3-1) hosts Fort Valley State that same day.

 Tennessee State, Alabama A&M and Winston Salem State Continue to Top HBCU Polls 

Tennessee State continues to top the black college football polls as Alabama A&M and Winston Salem State continue to follow close behind.
     All three teams are 6-0 and in the midst of dream seasons.  (Winston Salem State is a Division II team and is ranked first in D-II polls or third in polls for all HBCU teams).  TSU has hit the thick of the Ohio Valley Conference season and has knocked off one ranked Football Championship Series team (#16 Eastern Kentucky) and faces another top FCS team in Southeast Missouri this week.  Alabama A&M has plowed through the Southwestern Athletic Conference so far but face an improving Alcorn State team Saturday.   Winston Salem State faces a feisty St. Augustine's team that is 4-2 and looking to knock off a contender.

Results From Weekend of Oct. 6

Tennessee State Stays Unbeaten With Win Over #16 Eastern Kentucky

       Michael Germain's one-yard touchdown dive with eight seconds left gave 24th ranked Tennessee State a 23-20 win over #16 Eastern Kentucky, keeping the Big Blue Tigers undefeated at 6-0 on the season.
       Tennessee State, the number one ranked historically black college football team in the nation, was down 20-10 in the fourth quarter.  Running back Trabis Ward capped a 72-yard Tiger drive with a three-yard touchdown run.  The Tigers missed the extra point, but stopped the EKU offense on their next drive.
       Germain led the Tigers 68 yards over the next 2:24 seconds, ending with his touchdown run to give TSU the win.
        Germain finished with 228 yards passing while Ward moved up to fourth on TSU's all-time rushing list with 113 yards on the ground.
       
Deaunte Mason's Four Touchdowns Leads Unbeaten Alabama A&M Over Mississippi Valley

     

 Deaunte Mason threw for two touchdowns and ran for another two and the SWAC's stingiest defense clamped down as Alabama A&M routed Mississippi Valley State 35-0 to stay unbeaten.
        Mason had thrown for three scores and ran for two in each of the three games before Saturday's contest.  Against Mississippi Valley, the Bulldogs didnt need the extra TD.
        Mason ran a touchdown and added a 31-yard touchdown pass to lead the Bulldogs to a 21-0 halftime lead.  He added another rushing touchdown and touchdown pass to secure the win.  Mason has accounted for 19 touchdowns already this season and hasn't thrown an interception.
        Alabama A&M continues their dream season, with the Bulldogs 6-0 for the first time since 1966.  The Bulldogs host Alcorn State next weekend for Alabama A&M's homecoming weekend.


Kam Smith Throws for Five TDs in Winston Salem's Rout of Johnson C. Smith 

     Winston Salem State didnt even need starting quarterback in the second half against Johnson C. Smith.
     That's how dominant the Rams were in trouncing Johnson C. Smith 63-7 Saturday in Charlotte.
     Winston Salem quarterback Kam Smith threw five touchdown passes and 259 yards in the first half and then sat out the final two quarters as the Rams ran their record to 6-0 on the season.  Winston Salem State is ranked fourth among all Division II teams in the country.

Nation's Oldest HBCU Classic Has A Lot Riding for Morehouse and Tuskegee Today

    A lot is riding on today's installment of the nation's oldest continuously running matchup between historically black college and university football teams, the 77th Annual Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic in Columbus, Ga.
    Tuskegee (4-1) can start to truly assert themselves in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference western division, where three teams are unbeaten in conference play.  They'd also avenge a loss to Morehouse last season, which snapped a long winning streak in the series.
    The Maroon Tigers (2-3) have had two heartbreakingly-close losses this season and then seen injuries to their two top running backs - last year's SIAC Player of the Year David Carter and Shelton Hamilton.  A win would keep them in contention for the SIAC East Division crown and give them the pick-me-up they need.
    Carter returns to action today while the SIACs other top back, Tuskegee's Derrick Washington tries to keep pace.  Carter and Washington are tied for first in the SIAC with 101 yards per game rushing averages this season.
    It's also a game where the conference's top scoring defense, Tuskegee who only gives up 13.7 points per game, faces the SIAC's second-best scoring offense in Morehouse, which puts up a little over 31 points a game.
      Kickoff in Columbus is 2 p.m.

UNDEFEATED TENNESSEE STATE, ALABAMA A&M AND WINSTON-SALEM TRY TO STAY UNBLEMISHED

HBCU top-ranked Tennessee State faces a stiff test as they step back into Ohio Valley Conference play to host Eastern Kentucky.
    The Big Blue Tigers (5-0) easily has the toughest game of the nation's three undefeated HBCU football teams.  Eastern Kentucky is 4-1 this season and is ranked 16th in the country among Football Championship Series (formerly Division I-AA) teams, their highest ranking since 1999.  That year they lost to Tennessee State the week they were ranked this high.  But the Colonels have already defeated one ranked FCS team this year, 24th ranked Southeast Missouri.  Tennessee State, now ranked 24th in the country in the FCS, has beaten EKU twice in the schools' last three meetings.
     Alabama A&M (5-0) goes down to the Delta to take on a Mississippi Valley State team that is 1-3 after being shellacked by Northwestern State 45-14 last week.  A&M's Deaunte Mason will try to continue his astounding streak of throwing for at least three touchdowns and rushing for two TDs in three straight games.
    Winston Salem State (5-0), Division II's fourth ranked team nationally, goes to Charlotte to take on Johnson C. Smith, a 1-3 team that scores a lot of points.  They average nearly 31 points a game and nearly 400 yards of total offense.  The problem for them is they give up 32 points per game.  Winston Salem drilled Bowie State 35-3 last week and leads the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in offense and defense.
