Bowie State Knocks Off Winston-Salem State; Albany State Topples Tuskegee; EVERY HBCU Football Score From Saturday, Sept. 9
By ADD SEYMOUR JR.
Bowie State players kept saying that their match-up Saturday was just another game, the next one on the schedule.
It wasn't.
Bowie State made a huge statement in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association as Robert Chesson ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 31-13 victory over nationally-ranked Winston-Salem State.
"I wanted to win bad," said Bowie State quarterback Amir Hall told the Winston-Salem Journal. "No matter how I played, I wanted us to come out with a win. I did want this pretty bad."
Bowie State (2-0), who lost the CIAA Championship game to Winston-Salem State (1-1) last season, led by as many as 24 points in a game which the Bulldogs defense stymied the WSSU offense. The Rams only had 100 yards passing and 118 yards rushing.
Meanwhile, Bowie State got two first half touchdowns from Chesson while quarterback Amir Hall added a third quarter TD run to put Bowie State up 24-0. Winston-Salem State could never get the offense, especially a running game with Kerrion Moore that was so successful last weekend, going against an experience Bowie State defense.
"They've had this game circled on their schedule since November, and they out-physicalled us and we couldn't get off the mark," WSSU head coach Kienus Boulware told the Winston-Salem Journal. "They had us scratching our heads the whole game. Our bread and butter is the run, and they shut it down."
Albany State Defense Dominates Tuskegee
Albany State's "Dirty Blue" defense only allowed Tuskegee two first downs and 119 yards of offense as the Rams defeated Tuskegee 20-7.
Things started well for Tuskegee as Hoderick Lowe had a 71-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put Tuskegee up 7-0. But that would be their only score, and their main source of offense, all day. The Albany State didn't allow Tuskegee to get a first down until the third quarter, forcing five straight three-and-out and five punts.
Meanwhile, Chanellor Johnson threw two first half touchdown passes and another in the third quarter to lead Albany State to the win. Johnson finished with 209 yards and three TDs passing while McKinley Habersham ate up clock and yardage as he rushed for 144 yards. The Albany State ground game ran for a total of 253 yards on the day.
Mike Green caught seven passes for 100 yards and a TD for Albany State.
Tuskegee was led by linebacker Osband Thompson who had 16 tackles and forced a fumble, while Davoris Thomas added nine tackles, seven unassisted.
