Undefeated Bowie State and Virginia State Clash Today; Full Schedule of HBCU Football Games Today

By ADD SEYMOUR JR

What can you say about a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football team that scores 112 points in its last two games, averages nearly 41 points a game and is undefeated?

That they are a second place team.

Those lofty stats belong to Virginia State (5-0, 3-0), a team that takes on the even gaudier Bowie State (6-0, 3-0), a team that averages nearly 600 yards of offense and a whopping 54 points a game.

It's a game between the two best HBCU Division II teams in the nation and will go a long way in determining who will win the CIAA Northern Division title.  On top of that, it's homecoming day at Virginia State.

"You've got two undefeated teams going at it, so it's going to be an exciting game," said Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson to the Winston-Salem Journal.  "We know it's going to be a dogfight and we'll habve to be ready to play."

Bowie State is led by star quarterback Amir Hall who has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards this season, averages 330 yards passing a game, and has thrown 24 touchdowns versus just two interceptions.  He's also run for 266 yards and six touchdowns.

Virginia State counters the CIAA's top running back in Trenton Cannon.  Cannon has rushed for 629 yards, averaging 125 yards a game, and six touchdowns.

The two teams are also the CIAA's top defenses, with Bowie State ranked first and VSU second in total defense.

So this is a big game.

VSU head coach Reggie Barlow says his team is focused on containing the Bowie State offense.

"If they get close to their average, then it's going to be hard for us to keep pace, but we still want to play our game," Barlow said, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.  "We know how good they've been so far this season because you can see it in the scores of their games."
