Tuskegee Holds Slim Lead On Top of ADDS HBCU SPORTS REPORT D-2 Football Top Ten; North Carolina A&T Continues to Lead FCS Poll

There could have been huge changes in this week's ADD'S HBCU SPORTS REPORT Division II HBCU Football Top Ten poll after Kentucky State last week pulled off the upset of the year, so far.

Kentucky State (4-4, 4-1 SIAC) used a super-stingy defense and blocked two late kicks to defeat previously undefeated Tuskegee (6-1, 4-1 SIAC), which not only was the Throbreds' fourth win in a row, putting into this week's Top Ten, but it could have knocked Tuskegee out of the No. 1 spot.

But a topsy-turvy Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association race has their five top teams - Bowie State, Virginia State, Winston-Salem State and Chowan - all defeating each other the past few weeks. Still, Winston-Salem State has been a team on a roll as they've claimed the nation's No. 2 spot after winning their fifth game in a row, just being nosed out by Tuskegee for the top spot.

In the FCS poll, things stayed pretty much the same as last week as five of the top six teams all won, except for Tennessee State, which fought hard most of the way against SEC Vanderbilt before losing. Sixth ranked Prairie View A&M scored 44 points against previously winless Big 12 team Rice in their loss.

Kentucky State Upsets Previously Undefeated Tuskegee 10-9; Final Scores from HBCU Games Across the Nation

Kentucky State Head Coach John L. Smith called last week's comeback win over Miles a signature win for his program.

What will he call this week's monumental win on Tuskegee's homecoming day?

Kentucky State blocked an extra point and then a potentially game-winning field goal as the Throrobreds earned a huge 10-9 upset win at previously undefeated Tuskegee Saturday.  Tuskegee was ranked No. 5 among all of the nation's Division II football teams this week.

"I've been a part of some monumental wins," Smith said.  "But I've never been a part of a team that defeated a top-five ranked opponent on the road. Plus, we blocked two field goal attempts to do it. You have to give it up to our special teams and out defense."

Kentucky State (4-4, 4-1 SIAC) has won three in a row after starting off the season losing four of their first five and, more importantly, takes over first place in the SIAC West Division from Tuskegee (6-1, 4-1 SIAC).

Tuskegee scored a touchdown on a one-yard Jerome Lewis run with 1:25 remaining. But KSU's Donovan Cecil blocked the extra point attempt to keep the game at 10-9.  Tuskegee was able to get the ball back an drive downfield in the final minute of the game.  But their 18-yard field goal attempt with no time remaining was blocked by Rodriquez Jones, preserving the win.

Damontre Warr rushed for 99 yards to lead Kentucky State.  Jayjerian Craig led Tuskegee with 73 yards rushing.  But the stars of the game were the defenses for both teams. Osband Thompson (12 tackles and a sack) led a Tuskegee defense that only gave up six first downs and 194 yards of offense. Kentucky State's defense allowed only 98 yards passing to Tuskegee, 261 yards offense overall. Travon Spencer and Keonte Reynolds each had 11 tackles for Kentucky State.

MEAC

North Carolina A&T 34, Howard 7 - Lamar Raynard threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns while Tarik Cohen rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown as North Carolina A&T (6-1, 4-0 MEAC) spoils homecoming day at Howard (1-7, 1-4 MEAC).  Cohen went became one of only 26 FCS players to go over the 5,000-yard mark in career rushing. The A&T defense held the MEAC's second-leading rusher, Anthony Philyaw, to just 27 yards on the day. Howard on totaled 50 yards rushing total.

South Carolina State 30, Delaware State 3 - Bishop Ford rushed for 106 yards, while Caleb York and Dewann Ford each threw touchdown passes to lead South Carolina State (3-3, 3-0 MEAC) to the win over Delaware State (0-7, 0-4 MEAC).  The South Carolina State defense, led by Darius Richardson's 11 tackles, only allowed 151 yards of total offense to Delaware State. Delaware State linebacker Brian Cavicante had 13 tackles with Malik Harris adding 12 stops.

North Carolina Central 21, Morgan State 17 - Nalil Ramadan, filling in for an injured Malcolm Bell, threw a 16-yard TD pass to Jalen Wilkes with 3:59 left to lift North Carolina Central (6-2, 5-0 MEAC) to the win over Morgan State (2-4, 2-2 MEAC). Bell, who was hurt in the second quarter and didnt return, threw a TD pass early in the game.  Eric Harrell led Morgan State with 121 yards and a touchdown rushing. Ayodej Agbelese had 11 tackles, three for losses and two sacks for MSU.

Bethune-Cookman 21, Norfolk State 14 - Bethune-Cookman (1-5, 1-3 MEAC) got touchdown runs from Akevious Williams and Cameron Rigby as the Wildcats got their first win of the season, defeating Norfolk State (1-6, 0-4 MEAC).  Larry Brihm also threw a touchdown for BCU.  Norfolk State was led by Greg Hankerson who threw for 90 yards and rushed for 60 and a touchdown.

Florida A&M 31, Hampton 14 - Ryan Stanley threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns as Florida A&M (3-5, 3-2 MEAC) got the win over Hampton (3-4, 3-2 MEAC).  Fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Hans Supre and Tevin Spells iced the game for FAMU.  Hampton, led by Yahkee Johnson's 97 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 183 yards.

SWAC

Grambling 59, Mississippi Valley State 10 - Devante Kincaid continued a great season as the Grambling quarterback threw for 326 yards and four TDs in the easy win over Mississippi Valley State (0-8, 0-6 SWAC). Dominque Leake caught four passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns for Grambling (4-1, 4-0 SWAC).  MVSU had -35 yards rushing, giving them a grand total of 81 yards rushing for the ENTIRE season. Austin Bray had 213 yards and one touchdown passing for Mississippi Valley State.

Jackson State 21, Texas Southern 13 - Jackson State (3-4, 3-2 SWAC) continued an interesting streak - they haven't lost to a good Texas Southern (3-4, 3-3 SWAC) since since 2010.  The Tigers got second-half touchdown runs from Robert Johnson and Jordan Johnson (a 55-yard run) as Jackson State came back from a 10-7 hafltime time deficit.  Averion Hurts led Texas Southern with 107 yards and a TD passing and 37 yards rushing.

Rice 65, Prairie View A&M 44 - Rice (1-6) got their first win of the season after sprinting out to a 42-7 lead and holding on for the win over Prairie View A&M (4-3) in an offensive show. Tyler Stehling threw for 407 yards and five touchdowns while Samuel Stewart rushed for 116 and a TD. Jalen Morton led Prairie View with 278 yards and two TDs passing. Dawonya Tucker had two touchdown runs.  PVAM's Joshua Simmons returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown early.

Southern 49, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 17 - Austin Howard threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns while Lenard Tillery and Willie Quinn both had big games as Southern (4-2, 4-0 SWAC) got the easy win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-6, 1-4 SWAC).  Tillery rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns while Quinn caught six passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns.  Brandon Duncan threw for 181 yards for UAPB, with Willie Young catching eight passes for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Vanderbilt 35, Tennessee State 17 - TSU led early after Ronald Butler threw a 93-yard TD pass to Patrick Smith and then another short touchdown toss to Smith put them ahead 14-7.  But penalties and misakes, along with a brutal Vanderbilt running game wore down the Tigers who didnt score in the second half.  TSU gave up 505 yards of offense to Vanderbilt.

SWAC

Jackson State at Texas Southern - This is an important divisional game for both of teams.  Jackson State is half a game behind Alcorn State in the SWAC East and needs a win to keep pace. Texas Southern is two games behind Grambling and Southern and can't afford to lose another conference game. Texas Southern had won three in a row before losing a close game to Alcorn last week. Interesting fact: Texas Southern hasn't beaten Jackson State since 2010.

Grambling at Mississippi Valley State - Some may view this is your classic trap game - Grambling, the SWAC's best, against Mississippi Valley State, against the SWAC's worst. But  Grambling has been more than solid. Their defense has allowed the fewest points and yards per game than anyone else in the SWAC.  In fact, they've only given up the fewest amount of first downs in the nation at 72. MVSU scores a SWAC low 13.7 points a game and gives up 46 a game.

Prairie View A&M at Rice - This could be Prairie View A&M's chance to get Rice.  Rice is winless at 0-6 while Prairie View is hitting their stride.  They've only lost to Grambling and Texas A&M and Trey Green is having a good season at quarterback.  But Rice IS an FBS team and this is their homecoming day, so it won't be easy.   They struggle on offense, though they've scored at lesat 28 in two of their last three games.  Last week, they lost by one to Texas-San Antonio.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Southern - Southern has been on a roll, having won three in a row since starting 0-2 against two FBS teams.  They lead the SWAC in scoring, notching nearly 37 points per game and are second to Grambling in total offense. Quarterback Austing Howard and receiver Willie Quinn are having great years, as is running back Lenard Tillery, who is averaging 126 yards a game.  Since shocking Alcorn State in September, UAPB has struggled defensively and last week lost to Alabama A&M 40-7, their lowest scoring output since being blanked by Tennessee State 44-0 in the season-opener. Quarterback Brandon Duncan does lead the SWAC in passing yardage and total offense.


SIAC

Kentucky State at Tuskegee - Tuskegee is rested after a week off.  Undefeated and ranked No. 5 among all of the nation's Division II football teams, the Golden Tigers are cruising along, buoyed by the SIAC's top defense and second-best offense.  Quietly, Kentucky State has overcome an 0-4 start to win three in a row, with wins over Miles and Fort Valley State.  And they are only one game behind Tuskegee in the SIAC West division, so this is actually a very big game for Kentucky State - to make a statement and to completely unexpectedly jump into the driver's seat of the SIAC West race.  But that's a tall order against a very good Tuskegee team.

Clark Atlanta at Albany State - This could be a great game.  Albany State has had a tough season, but they've played some of the best teams in the country.  They held off Morehouse last week, but quarterback Caleb Edmonds has been solid. Clark Atlanta is hardly some doormat homecoming opponent.  They lead the SIAC East and quarterback Johnathan McCrary is having a great season. CAU leads the SIAC in total offense and passing offense.  This is a battle for the SIAC East lead. And its homecoming at Albany State.

Miles at Lane - This has turned out to be an up-and-down season for both of these teams.  Miles has won every other game this season, though their losses have come to West Georgia, Albany State and a surging Kentucky State team.   So they are seeking consistency.  Lane won their first three, though two were against NAIA competition. Since then, they've been 1-3 with big struggles on offense and has been without quarterback Marcus Reynolds the past two weeks.  Lane has averaged just over 11 points a game the last four weeks.

Morehouse at Benedict - Benedict lost the SIAC East lead to Clark Atlanta last week and needs a win to keep pace with Clark Atlanta and Albany State.  They've lost three straight. Morehouse's promising 2-0 start is a distant memory after five straight losses.  Their games have been a tale of two halves - one good and one bad. Benedict needs to find a way to hold off one of the league's top defensive players in David Smith, who had 19 tackles against Albany State last week.

Central State at Fort Valley State - No one expected Fort Valley State to come into this game on a four-game losing streak and just 1-5 on the season.  But its true.  They get fellow 1-6 team, Central State, who got their first win of the season last week over Lane.  Central State ranks second in total defense, while FVSU is next to last.  Lavon Meeks had a big game last week for Central State and De'Michael Jackson is averaging 103 yards rushing a game.


MEAC

North Carolina Central at Morgan State - In this game, Morgan State's achilles heel is North Carolina Central's strength.  NCCU has the conference's second-best quarterback in Malcolm Bell, who has thrown for nearly 1,500 yards and 11 TDs this season.  Morgan State's pass defense gives up 200 yards passing a game.  Chris Andrews has been solid at quarterback for Morgan State, as he is looking to break into the 1,000 yard category this season.

North Carolina A&T at Howard - North Carolina A&T, the top-ranked FCS team in the ADDS HBCU SPORTS REPORT Top Ten football poll, may not take lightly that they are Howard's homecoming opponent this week. This is a team that has only lost once - to a FBS opponent - and leads the MEAC in most categories. Howard is led by running back Anthony Philyaw who is second in rushing in the MEAC and having a great season.  But the Howard offense is running up against the North Carolina A&T defense, which is tops in the conference, including in run defense.  This is also a showcase of the MEAC's top two runners in Philyaw and A&T's Tarik Cohen.

Delaware State at South Carolina State - Looking at statistics, these two teams are that far off from each other.  Delaware State is only averages around 16 points a game while South Carolina State puts up 17. Delaware State is last in total defense while South Carolina State is next to last. The difference is SCSU has played a monster schedule with three FBS teams and has won their two FCS games while Delaware State remains winless. Darius Leonard has been a tackling machine for South Carolina State with 68 and leading the MEAC.

Bethune-Cookman at Norfolk State - No one would have thought that Bethune-Cookman, which has won or shared five of the last six MEAC titles, would be winless at this point in the season.  But they are. Defense is their problem.  They give up 34 points and 431 yards a game.  Greg Hankerson leads Norfolk State, as he has thrown for 162 yards a game and rushes for 41 a game, making him third in total offense in the MEAC.

Hampton at Florida A&M - Hampton quarterback Jaylien Williamson has had a great year as he leads the MEAC in passing with 227 yards a game and is second in total offense.  But FAMU, while mired in a dismal year, has the MEAC's top pass defense, allowing less than 160 yards a game.  It's the rushing defense where FAMU has problems - they give up 232 yards a game, which transpires to a lot of time off the clock.  Hampton, with Williamson and Yahkee Johnson, are a solid rushing team.


CIAA

Fayetteville State at St. Augustine's - First task for St. Augustine's - stop Stevie Green. Johnson C. Smith couldn't do it last week as Green rushed for 234 yards.  Green has rushed for 757 yards this morning.   The Broncos have won two straight after losing their first five games, so they are on a mini-roll.  St. Augustine's gives up 48 points a game.  But they have a good quarterback in D.J. Johnson who has thrown for 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns and leads them in rushing 64 yards a game. He has had six interceptions and two fumbles this season.

Chowan at Elizabeth City State - Chowan got a huge win last week over Virginia Union as Tyree Lee and Randall Dixon both had big days.  Their only loss in the last five games was a one-touchdown defeat to Bowie State.  They average 31 points a game.  Defense is an issue for Elizabeth City State as they give up 36 points a game.  But behind quarterback Daquan Neal, they average 28 points a game.  Neal leads ECSU in passing and rushing.

Johnson C. Smith at Shaw - Shaw has been winless as they have an offense that averages just 12 points a game and a defense that gives up 35. Johnson C. Smith hasn't been much better with 15 points a game on offense and a defense that gives up 39 points a game.  They do have a win this season over Elizabeth City State and played well against Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State.

Livingstone at Winston-Salem State - Winston-Salem State has bounced back from a slow start to become one of the better teams in the country.  They have won four in a row and have given up just an average of 12 points a game during that span. Livingstone's problem is scoring.  They put up 23 in their win over Shaw last week, but prior to that, they scored 62 in four losses - 37 coming in one game. Freshman quarterback Xavier Longerbeam has been solid as has running back Jarius Richardson, who rushed for 118 yards last week.

Bowie State at Virginia Union - Virginia Union is smarting from a tough loss to one of the CIAA leaders in Chowan while Bowie State got a huge win in a nail-biter over another of those leaders, Virginia State.  VUU had been on a big roll, winning four in a row before last week's loss, in which they gave up a season-high 54 points.  Bowie State averages nearly 41 points per game, with quarterback Amir Hall coming off a big game in which he threw for 332 yards and accounted for five touchdowns against a good defense.  This should be a very good game.

Lincoln (Pa) at Virginia State - Virginia State is a team hungry for a win after a nail-biter loss to Bowie State last week.  But their three offensive stars - quarterback Tarian Ayers and running backs Trenton Cannon and Kavon Bellamy are having great seasons.  Lincoln (Pa) has lost five in a row. They've struggled on defense this season, giving up nearly 37 points a game. This looks to be a tough visit for Lincoln (Pa).


OTHERS

Tennessee State at Vanderbilt - This is a game between a long time HBCU football power and one of the SEC's doormats.  But in Nashville, this is a big deal.  They've only played once before, in 2006 when Vanderbilt pulled away late for a 38-9 win.  The TSU defense has to slow down Vandy's run game, which is one of the SEC's best. The TSU offense has to be consistent against a team that defeated Georgia at Georgia last week.

Cheyney at West Chester University of Pa - Defense is an issue at Cheyney.  Not since their first game, a 21-20 win over Lincoln (Pa), have they not held a team to less than 51 points during a dismal season.  Twice, including last week (76-0 loss to Shippensburg), they've given up at least 76 points.

West Virginia State at Glenville State - West Virginia State has struggled on defense this season, which is why third-ranked Shepherd put 70 points and 804 yards in offense on them last week.  This week they get Glenville State, a team that has a strong quarterback in Dante Roberts.  He has thrown for 1700 yards and 16 touchdowns so far this season.

Lincoln (Mo) at Indianapolis - Lincoln (Mo) has had a tough time scoring points this season. Even in their only win they had only 12 against Lane. Interim head coach Lee Johnson, who replaced Mike Jones after week four, saw his team give up 65 against Missouri S&T. Indianapolis, who easily defeated Lincoln last week, had to go to backup quarterback Bryce Stancombe after starter Jake Purichia was injured.  Stancombe threw for nearly 400 yards in their loss.

Langston at Southwestern Assemblies of God - Langston needs a win to keep pace in the CSFL, as they are one game behind Arizona Christian.  They got a late field goal from Juan Carpio to cap a comeback win over a decent Bacone team last week.  This week they get Southwestern Assemblies of God, a two-win team that is 0-3 in conference play.  Langston will have to slow down a SAGU passing game that has accounted for 1,700 and 12 touchdowns this season.

Wayland Baptist at Texas College - Texas College ranks at the bottom of the CSFL in total offense, which really isn't good this week as Wayland Baptist is a balanced offense that has produced 22 touchdowns and 406 yards of offense a game this season.  Wayland Baptist has the league's second-best defense, with Texas College ranking last.

North Carolina A&T and Tuskegee Remain at the Top of the ADD'S HBCU SPORTS REPORT HBCU Football Top Ten Polls

There weren't any changes at the top of either FCS or Division II ADD'S HBCU SPORTS REPORT HBCU Football Top Ten polls this week. 

North Carolina A&T (4-1, 3-0 MEAC) overpowered Bethune-Cookman to remain at the top of the FCS poll while Tennessee State (5-1, 2-1 OVC) knocked off Eastern Kentucky off a huge first half in their homecoming win.  

North Carolina Central (5-2, 4-0 MEAC) actually leads the MEAC over A&T, since they have played and won one more game.  Alcorn State (3-3, 3-2 SWAC) jumped back into the rankings by defeating Texas Southern (3-3, 3-2 SWAC).

In the Division II poll, Tuskegee (6-0, 4-0 SIAC) was off this past weekend while Bowie State (5-2, 4-0 CIAA) nipped Virginia State (5-2, 2-2 CIAA) Saturday.  Winston-Salem State (5-2, 4-0 SIAC) and Clark Atlanta (5-2, 3-2 SIAC) after wins this weekend, while Virginia Union (4-3, 3-1 CIAA) dropped after Chowan (5-2, 3-1 CIAA) defeated them.

Scores and Rundowns of EVERY HBCU Football Game Played on Saturday

MEAC

North Carolina A&T 52, Bethune-Cookman 35 - A 28-point fourth quarter that included two Tarik Cohen touchdown runs lifted North Carolina A&T (5-1, 3-0 MEAC) over Bethune-Cookman (0-5, 0-3 MEAC).  The third of three Larry Brihm to Frank Brown touchdown passes had given Bethune-Cookman a 28-24 lead early in the fourth quarter. Cohen finished with 220 yards and three TDs on the ground for his third straight 200-yard game. Lamar Raynard threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns.  Bethune-Cookman was led by Brhim, who had 376 yards passing and four touchdowns.

South Carolina State 14, Howard 9 - Caleb York's 5-yard touchdown pass to Mykal Moody early in the fourth quarter lifted South Carolina State (2-3, 2-0 MEAC) over Howard (1-6, 1-3 MEAC) in a hard-fought game. The Howard defense only gave up 174 yards of offense to South Carolina State but a mishandled snap by Howard punter Damon Gillespie deep in their own territory set up South Carolina State for a short, 23-yard drive to get the winning touchdown. Darius Leonard had 14 tackles and had two of South Carolina State's five interceptions. Philip Henry also picked off two Howard passes. Howard's Anthony Philyaw was the game's offensive leader with 160 yards rushing. Jalen Day had ten solo tackles for Howard.

North Carolina Central 33, Savannah State 3 - Malcolm Bell threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another TD as North Carolina Central (5-2, 4-0 MEAC) shut down Savannah State (1-4, 1-2 MEAC). Jalen Wilkes caught six of Bell's passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. The NCCU defense only gave up 141 yards and had six sacks. Isaiah Bennett had 11 tackles and an interception for Savannah State while Marquis Smith added ten tackles, two sacks and four tackles for losses.

Florida A&M 41, Delaware State 27 - Florida A&M (2-5, 2-2 MEAC) had 21 fourth-quarter points to break open a 20-20 fourth-quarter tie to pull away for the win over Delaware State (0-6, 0-3 MEAC).  During that period, Ryan Stanley ran for a touchdown and threw another while Orlando McKinney picked off a DSU pass and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. Stanley rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 204 yards and a touchdown.  Delaware State rushed for 325 yards on the day, with Brycen Alleyne rushing for 169 yards and two TDs and Mike Waters adding 150 on the ground.  Delaware State outgained FAMU, 510 yards to 368.

Hampton 21, Morgan State 12 - Jaylien Williamson threw two touchdowns and caught one from receiver Twarn Mixon as Hampton (3-3, 3-1 MEAC) picked up the homecoming win over Morgan State (2-3, 2-1 MEAC).  The Hampton defense shut down Morgan State in the second half to keep the game close as Williamson sealed the win.  Devin Vandyke and Steven Smith both had 11 tackles for Hampton.  Chris Andrews threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns for Morgan State.


CIAA

Chowan 54, Virginia Union 21 - Chowan (5-2, 3-1 CIAA) jumped out to a 27-0 lead early in the second quarter behind three Tyree Lee touchdowns and cruised from from there to defeat Virginia Union (4-3, 3-1 CIAA).  Randall Dixon had a huge day for Chowan, throwing for 412 yards and two touchdowns, one of them to Lee, who rushed for 154 yards and ran for four touchdowns. Tyrone Carter caught eight passes for 194 yards. Virginia Union's Shawheem Dowdy threw for 380 yards and two touchdown passes as he threw 68 passes on the day. Chowan only allowed Virginia Union to rush for 23 yards.

Fayetteville State 37, Johnson C. Smith 21 - Stevie Green rushed for 234 yards and a touchdown as Fayetteville State (2-5, 2-2 CIAA) outscored Johnson C. Smith (1-6, 1-4 CIAA) 27-7 in the second half to get the win.  Devin Knudson threw two TDs including one during that second half. Harold Herbin led Johnson C. Smith with two touchdown passes and one rushing.

Bowie State 38, Virginia State 37 - Amir Hall's two-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter proved to be the difference maker as Bowie State (5-2, 4-0 CIAA) erased a 17-point second half deficit to win a battle of the CIAA's top two teams over Virginia State (5-2, 2-2 CIAA).  VSU led 37-20 midway through the third quarter after the second of two Tarian Ayres third-quarter touchdown passes.  Bowie State got a touchdown pass from Hall, a touchdown run by Robert Chesson and then Hall's touchdown run.  Hall finished with 332 yards and four touchdowns passing and one rushing with Nyme Manns catching nine passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.  VSU's Trenton Cannon rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown with Kavon Bellamy adding 104 yards and touchdowns.

Livingstone 23, Shaw 12 - Jarius Richardson rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown as Livingstone (2-6, 1-3 CIAA) defeated Shaw (0-7, 0-4 CIAA).  Richardson's 45-yard TD run in the third quarter gave Livingstone a 23-6 lead that put the game out of reach. Xavier Longerbeam threw 163 yards and two touchdowns for Livingstone. Timothy Abbott led Shaw with 178 yards passing, but threw two interceptions.  Shaw's Dominique Hannibal had 18 tackles, four for losses and two sacks.

Elizabeth City State 33, Lincoln (Pa) 23 - Daquan Neal threw for 226 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another TD as Elizabeth Cit State (3-4, 2-2 CIAA) got the win over Lincoln (Pa) (1-6, 0-4 CIAA).  Lincoln (Pa) led by 15-13 just before halftime, but ECSU followed that with a Joshua Laverty field goal four seconds before the half to get the lead for good.  Lavety kicked two field goals and had three extra points. Jason Epps had two touchdown passes for Lincoln (Pa) with Stephen Scott adding 74 yards and a TD rushing and 50 receiving yards. Deion Miller had 14 tackles, 11 solo, for Lincoln (Pa).

Winston-Salem State 45, St. Augustine's 10 - Te'Vaughn Hurse rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown while Kerrion Moore threw for two touchdowns as Winston-Salem State (5-2, 4-0 CIAA) got an easy win over St. Augustine's (2-5, 2-2 CIAA).  Rod Tinsley threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns. St. Augustine's was led D.J. Johnson who threw for 142 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 69 yards. Rovonta Johnson had 90 yards rushing for SAU.

SWAC

Alabama State 56, Mississippi Valley State 24 - Khalid Thomas rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown as the Alabama State (2-5, 2-4 SWAC) rushed for 346 yards to get the win over Mississippi Valley State (0-7, 0-5 SWAC).  Six ASU players rushed for touchdowns. Quarterback Quinterris Toppings rushed for a touchdown and threw for another. Joshua Banks caught eight passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mississippi Valley State.

Alcorn State 23, Texas Southern 20 - De'Lance Turner's blocked punt and then ran a 2-yard touchdown run to lift Alcorn State (3-3, 3-2 SWAC) to the win over Texas Southern (3-3, 3-2 SWAC).  The Braves had struggled on offense after starting quarterback Lenorris Footman left the game with a shoulder injury.  Footman finished with 196 yards and two touchdowns passing. Norlando Veals caught six passes for 106 yards and two TDs. Darien Anderson had 13 tackles, two sacks and four tackles for losses to lead the ASU defense.  Averion Hurts led Texas Southern with 219 yards and a touchdown passing and 53 yards and a touchdown rushing.  Sean Jones led the TSU defense with 16 tackles.

Alabama A&M 40, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 7 - De'Angelo Ballard had a huge day, rushing for three touchdowns and passing for another as Alabama A&M (2-5, 2-4 SWAC) easily defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-5, 1-3 SWAC).  Ballard threw for 214 yards and rushed for 89.  Jordan Bentley led the Bulldogs with 91 yards and a TD on the ground.  Brandon Duncan led UAPB with 140 yards and a TD passing. UAPB defenders Jentrel Woodard and Willie Duncan both had 11 tackles.

Southern 28, Jackson State 24 - Austin Howard's late third-quarter touchdown pass to Randall Menard lifted Southern (3-2, 3-0 SWAC) to a come-from-behind win over Jackson State (2-4, 2-2 SWAC).  Southern had led 21-10 in the second quarter, but Jackson State's Derrick Bobo blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown just before halftime and then Joshua Bates ran a 2-yard TD to give JSU a 24-21 lead in the third quarter.  But Southern followed with what proved to be the game-winning drive and then shut down Jackson State the rest of the way to seal the win.  Lenard Tillery led Southern with 127 yards and two touchdowns rushing. Howard finished 24-of-35 for 288 yards and two touchdowns, both to Menard.

SIAC

Kentucky State 28, Miles 24 - Kentucky State's Nick Beckhum recovered a Miles fumble with 2:10 left and dived into the end zone to end a 14-point, fourth quarter comeback homecoming win for KSU.  Kentucky State trailed 24-14 when Damontre Warr ran for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.  Miles picked off a KSU pass late in the fourth quarter, but Miles' fumbled it deep in their territory as Beckhum recovery sealed the win. KSU quarterback Jules St Ge had 76 yards and one TD passing and 117 yards rushing while Warr finished with 92 yards rushing. Miles rushed for 314 yards, with quarterback David Whipple finishing with 122 yards and Ger'Kerry Jackson adding 117 and a touchdown.

Florida Tech 48, Fort Valley State 14 - Quarterback Mark Cato threw two touchdowns and ran for three during a Florida Tech (5-1) 41-point first half that sunk Fort Valley State (1-6). Cato finished with 140 yards passing and 26 rushing.  Antwuan Haynes added 76 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Panthers. FVSU was led by Domontay Jones, who had 118 yards and a touchdown passing.

Central State 27, Lane 10 - Quarterback Lavon Meeks threw for a touchdown and rushed for two more to lead Central State (1-6, 1-4 SIAC) to their first win of the season. Deonate Gary had 14 tackles for Central State, with Anthony Hamm adding 12 and Okoye Bozeman and Nehemiah Coward each had 10.  Lane (3-3, 2-2 SIAC) was led by Marquez Pickett who had 184 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked four times. Javonte Kelly led Lane's defense with eleven tackles, with Whitney Richardson adding ten tackles and two sacks.

Clark Atlanta 27, Benedict 14 - Johnathan McCrary threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns and added 42 yards and a TD rushing to lead Clark Atlanta (5-2, 3-2 SIAC) to a homecoming win over Benedict (3-4, 2-2 SIAC).  Trenton Earl caught seven McCrary passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The win gave CAU the lead in the SIAC East division.  George Myers Jr. led Benedict with 115 yards and a TD rushing.

Albany State 26, Morehouse 21 - Caleb Edmonds threw two touchdowns and ran for another in a 24-point second quarter to lead Albany State (3-3, 2-1 SIAC) to the win over Morehouse (2-5, 1-4 SIAC). Morehouse's Kivon Taylor threw two TD passes in the third quarter, but ASU shut down the Maroon Tigers after that to hold on for the win.  Edmonds finished with 170 yards passing and 84 rushing. Taylor finished with 151 yards passing for Morehouse.  David Smith, last week's SIAC Defensive Player of the Week, had 19 tackles, 4.5 for losses, a forced fumble and 1.5 sacks for Morehouse.


OTHERS

Tennessee State 35, Eastern Kentucky 27 - Ronald Butler ran for two touchdowns during a 35-3 first half for Tennessee State (5-1, 2-1 OVC) as the Tigers held on to defeat Eastern Kentucky (2-4, 1-2 OVC).  Butler had a quiet day passing, with 181 yards and no touchdowns, but he rushed for 81 yards.  Erick Evans led TSU with 83 yards rushing.  Ezra Robinson had a 93-yard interception return for a touchdown during that first half spree. Chris Collins led the TSU defense with 11 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. EKU was led by Bennie Coney, who had 350 yards rushing, but threw four interceptions.

Langston 33, Bacone 32 - Juan Carpio hit a 20-yard field goal with 50 seconds remaining to lift Langston (3-2, 1-1 CSFL) to a homecoming win over Bacone (2-5, 2-2 CSFL).  Bacone's Erik King had returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to put them up 32-21.  Carpio followed that with a field goal and then Kievon Jackson close the gap to two points after his late third quarter 27 yard touchdown run.  Langston's Peter Gordon picked off a Bacone pass with 4:30 left, setting up the Lions for the winning drive.

Arizona Christian 57, Texas College 7 - Gerit Groenwold and Ryan Esslinger combined to throw for 216 yards and five touchdowns as Arizona Christian (4-2, 3-0 CSFL) routed Texas College (0-6, 0-3 CSFL).  Arizona Christian held Texas College to only two yards rushing on the day. Quarterbacks Sean Stell had 122 yards passing for Texas College, who's only touchdown came from Carlos Mosby late in the game.

Shippensburg 76, Cheyney 0 - Chase Yocum rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 127 yards and another TD to lead Shippensburg (5-2, 3-1 PSAC) to the rout over Cheyney (1-6, 0-4 PSAC).   The Raiders rushed for 334 yards and seven touchdowns, with Colin McDermott and Marcus Lominy each rushing for two touchdowns.  Landon Archeangelo threw for 109 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Yocum. Jamal Hines had 11 tackles for Cheyney.

Missouri S&T 65, Lincoln (Mo) 16 - Tyler Swart threw for 215 yards and four touchdowns to lead Missouri S&T (4-3, 3-1 GLVC) to the rout over Lincoln (Mo) (1-6, 0-4 GLVC).  Deshawn Jones added 136 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Dennis Vinson led Lincoln (Mo) with 177 yards and a touchdown passing.  But he was sacked seven times.

Shepherd 70, West Virginia State 24 - Connor Jessop threw for 480 yards and five touchdowns to lead third-ranked Shepherd (6-0, 6-0 MEC) to an easy win over West Virginia State (1-6, 1-6 MEC). Brandon Hlavach rushed for 100 yards while Jessop added two TDS rushing.  Shepherd had 804 yards of offense.  Their defense held WVSU to 35 yards rushing. WVSU's Matt Kinnick threw for 154 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked six times.

SWAC

Mississippi Valley State at Alabama State - You know its a tough season so far if your athletics web site features past football players instead of the current ones.  But that's how things are at Mississippi Valley State (0-6, 0-4 SWAC).  Last week's throttling by Montana erased memories of a close game with Jackson State two weeks ago.  The Delta Devils are the worst SWAC team when it comes to total offense. Alabama State (1-5, 1-4 SWAC) has been competitive in nearly every game (save for the 64-6 Southern debacle). Khalid Thomas has been a solid rusher, ranking second in the SWAC right now.

Texas Southern at Alcorn State - Last week, Alcorn State (2-3, 2-2 SWAC) looked like Alcorn State in defeating Alabama A&M. At times, the Alcorn State offense has had trouble scoring like they did last season, though they move the ball well.  Texas Southern (3-2, 3-1 SWAC) has won three in a row, though they haven't beaten the best of the SWAC yet.  The Texas Southern offense has been consistent, which may be a problem for Alcorn State.  In their three losses, they've given up 45, 43, and 52 points.

CIAA

Shaw at Livingstone - Livingstone (1-5, 0-3 CIAA) has lost their last four games, but they fought hard in a loss to St. Augustine's last week.  Their stagnant offense put up 37 points.  A quartet of freshmen quarterbacks have combined to throw for 1100 yards so far.  But their defense gives up 32 points a game. Shaw (0-6, 0-3 CIAA) has played some really good teams, and has lost their last two games by a combined eight points. Freshman Timothy Abbott has shared the quarterback job with Daron Downing, who is at this point, Shaw's leading rusher.

Virginia State at Bowie State - This is probably the biggest game in the CIAA today.  Virginia State 5-1, 2-1 CIAA) and Bowie State (4-2, 3-0 CIAA) are not only the two best teams in the CIAA so far this season, they are two of the better teams in HBCU Division II football.  Bowie State's offense, led by quarterback Amir Hall (2,031 yards passing, 15 touchdowns), averages 40 points a game to lead the CIAA.  Virginia State grinds it out on the ground behind Kavon Bellamy and Trenton Cannon. This one will come down to defense. Both are stingy with Virginia State's being just a little stingier. Great game on tap here.


MEAC

North Carolina A&T at Bethune-Cookman - This is a must game for Bethune-Cookman (0-4, 0-2 MEAC) if they are to climb back into the MEAC race.  And they will have to knock off one of the best teams in the country in North Carolina A&T (4-1, 2-0 MEAC). The Wildcats will have to pick up the offense to do so as they only average 17 points a game while A&T averages 37.  Interesting fact: Bethune-Cookman has won four straight home games in this series.

Benedict at Clark Atlanta - It's homecoming day in Atlanta as Clark Atlanta (4-2, 2-2 SIAC) looks to take over the SIAC East lead if they defeat current leader Benedict (3-3, 2-1 SIAC).  CAU quarterback Jonathan McCrary is a on a roll as he has thrown for more than 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.  Benedict isn't a big offensive team. It's defense where they shine, as they are fourth in the SIAC as they only allow 288 yards a game.  This could be one of the better matchups of the day.

Albany State at Morehouse - Morehouse (2-4, 1-3 SIAC) is a team that's fired up to play Albany State after going toe-to-toe with Tuskegee last week.  They slowed down Tuskegee and hope to use their stellar run defense, led by SIAC Defensive Player of the Week David Smith, to slow down Albany State (2-3, 1-1 SIAC) and quarterback Caleb Edmonds and running back Jarvis Small.  Both teams still have a chance at shot at the SIAC title game if they begin a run today in a topsy-turvy SIAC East race.

OTHERS

Eastern Kentucky at Tennessee State - It's homecoming day at Tennessee State (4-1, 1-1 OVC) and if the Tigers want a chance at an OVC title, they will have to defeat Eastern Kentucky (2-3, 1-1 OVC).  This is an old foe that TSU has had problems with over the years.  But the TSU offense is clicking as Ronald Butler has stepped in at quarterback and been solid.  EKU, which leads this series 23-5 and won easily last year, is a more defensive minded squad this season, though quarterback Bennie Coney has been solid win nearly a 1,000 yards passing this season.

North Carolina A&T Takes Over Top Spot in FCS ADD'S HBCU SPORTS REPORT Top Ten Poll; Tuskegee Remains No. 1 in Division II Poll

Tennessee State's first lost of the season and North Carolina A&T continuing their roll has shaken up the top spots of this week's ADD'S HBCU SPORTS REPORT FCS/Division II HBCU football top ten polls.

Tennessee State (4-1, 1-1 OVC) narrowly fell to Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois, one of the top teams in FCS football, last Saturday while North Carolina A&T (4-1, 3-0 MEAC) easily took care of Norfolk State to claim the top spot in this week's poll.

In Division II football, Tuskegee (6-0, 4-0 SIAC) continues their dominant season after defeating Morehouse last Saturday and remaining at the top of the poll.  Tuskegee jumped up to No. 5 among all of the nation's Division II football teams.

One of the top movers in either poll is surprising Clark Atlanta (4-2, 3-2 SIAC), a team that has won three in a row and gets ready for a homecoming contest against Benedict this weekend.
