In a huge North Division battle between the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's best teams,
Virginia State outscored Bowie State 20-14 in a wild fourth quarter to defeat the Bulldogs 47-35 Saturday.
It was the first loss of the season for Bowie State (6-1, 3-1 CIAA) and puts them behind Virginia State (6-0, 4-0 CIAA) in the race for the division's berth in the CIAA Championship Game.
"Ain't never been one like that," Virginia State quarterback Cordelral Cook told the Progress Index after the game. "Coming in, we knew it was a big game and a big task .... and our goal was just to come out and win at the end."
Going into the highly-anticipated battle, both teams had video game type statistics, with Bowie State averaging nearly 55 points and 600 yards of offense per game and Virginia State averaging 41 points a game, with 112 points in their previous two games.
VSU took an early 20-7 lead after touchdown runs by Cook, Trenton Cannon and Blair Wynn. Cannon's went for 93 yards.Amir Hall threw TD passes to Lansana Seay and Brandon Britton in the second quarter while Cook threw a TD 55-yard TD pass as the things were close at halftime at 27-21 Virginia State.
But Cook ran two fourth quarter touchdowns and threw another to Joshua Harris as Virginia State sprinted away for the win.
Cook threw for 234 yards and two TDs and ran for 100 yards and three more touchdowns in a huge day. Cannon also had a big day, rushing for 234 yards and a touchdown.
Hall finished with 281 yards and five touchdowns passing for Bowie State. Britton caught 11 passes for 131 yards and two of those TDs. Robert Chesson rushed for 87 yards.

MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Hampton 16, Norfolk State 14 - Yakhee Johnson rushed for 115 yards and Shai McKenzie ran for two touchdowns as Hampton (4-3, 3-0) held on to defeat Norfolk State (2-4, 2-1) in the Battle of the Bay. Hampton jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on McKenzie's two TDs and they held on to get the win. The Pirate defense bent, but didn't break, besides two NSU touchdown passes by Juwan Carter. Carter finished with 211 yards passing, 111 of that and the two TD passes to Marcus Taylor.
North Carolina Central 24, Gardner-Webb 17 - Chauncey Caldwell threw for 333 yards and two TDs and ran for another score to lead North Carolina Central (5-1) to the win over Gardner-Webb (1-5). GWU was led by Tyrell Maxwell who had 165 yards and two touchdowns rushing.
Howard 52, Delaware State 23 - Howard (3-3, 2-1) broke open a close game with 21-third quarter points to pull away for the easy win over Delaware State (0-6, 0-4). Caylin Newton led Howard with 285 yards and two touchdowns passing and 81 yards rushing. Kyle Anthony caught six passes for 135 yardss and a touchdown. Delaware State was led by quarterbacks Jack McDaniel (191 yards and a touchdown) and Keenan Black (175 yards and two touchdowns). There was plenty of offense - Howard had 628 yards of offense while DSU had 510, including 401 yards passing, their most in modern DSU history.
North Carolina A&T 31, Florida A&M 20 - Lamar Reynard threw three second-quarter touchdown passes as North Carolina A&T (7-0, 4-0) stayed undefeated by knocking off Florida A&M (2-5, 1-3). Raynard threw for 215 yards while Marquell Cartwright ran for 84 yards and a touchdown. NCAT was far from perfect as they turned the ball over three times and were outgained by FAMU in the second half. Florida A&M was led by Ryan Stanley who threw for 167 yards and a touchdown and Devin Bowers who rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
SOUTHERN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Tuskegee 33, Jackson State 7 - Tuskegee (5-2, 3-1 SIAC) is now 2-0 against FCS/SWAC opponents this season after handling Jackson State (0-6, 0-2 SWAC). The Golden Tigers defeated Alabama State 14-6 in their opener. Saturday, Jamarcus Ezell threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards while Hoderick Lowe rushed for 73 yards. Tuskegee's defense only allowed JSU 21 yards rushing and 96 yards passing, had six sacks and an interception. Brent Lyles threw for Jackson State's only touchdown.
Albany State 34, Morehouse 10 - Cameron Miller's 59-yard interception return for a TD early in the second quarter had Morehouse (3-4, 1-2) up 10-9 heading into halftime, but Albany State (5-2, 3-0) scored 25 unanswered in the second half to get the big East Division win. McKinley Habersham had another big day for ASU, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown. Chancellor Johnson threw for 105 yards and a touchdown. Morehouse was led by Kivon Taylor's 93 yards passing. Morehouse sacked ASU quarterbacks six times while ASU sacked Morehouse quarterbacks seven times.
Fort Valley State 37, Lane 14 - Slade Jarman threw three touchdown passes during Fort Valley State's 31-0 start as the Wildcats (3-3, 3-0) cruised to the win over Lane (1-6, 0-3). Jarman finished with 293 yards and four touchdowns passing. Tajee Steele caught two of those TD passes. Lane only had 136 yards of offense, 109 of it rushing. DeMichael McQueen had 15 tackles for Lane.
Miles 35, Kentucky State 0 - Justin Hardy had a huge day, rushing for 178 yards and two touchdowns to lead Miles (4-2, 2-1) to a rout of Kentucky State (2-4, 1-2). Joseph Cambridge threw two TD passes for Miles. Brett Sylve led Kentucky State with 106 yards rushing. Andre Miles had 12 tackles for KSU.
Benedict 14, Clark Atlanta 3 - The SIAC's top offense met up with the conference's top scoring defense. The defense won out as Benedict (4-2, 2-1) kept Clark Atlanta (3-3, 1-2) out of the end zone for the first time this season. Benedict held Clark Atlanta to 130 yards of total offense. Christian Lisby, in his first start, threw for 200 yards and ran for a touchdown. Receiver Okechi Ntiasagwe caught ten passes for 118 yards. Harding Harper led Clark Atlanta with ten tackles, eight solo and he forced a fumble.
Central State 40, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 35 - Central State (1-6, 0-3 SIAC) broke a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season as they defeated FCS/SWAC Arkanasas-Pine Bluff (2-5, 1-2 SWAC). CSU was down 28-20 going into the fourth quarter, but got two touchdown runs from Terraris Saffold and one from Darius Meadors to take over the game on the road. Trent Mays threw for 334 yards and a touchdown while Safford had 87 yards. Darius Ford caught eight passes for 117 yards. UAPB was led by LeEar patterson who threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns and KeShawn Williams rushed for 97 yards and a TD.
SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Alcorn State 34, Prairie View A&M 21 - After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, Alcorn State (5-2, 3-0) scored 34 unanswered points to defeat Prairie View A&M (2-4, 2-2). Its Alcorn State's fourth consecutive win. Noah Johnson threw for one touchdown and ran for two others to lead ASU while Lenorris Footman also ran for a score. Neiko Hollins led Prairie View A&M with 291 yards and three touchdowns passing.
Alabama A&M 49, Mississippi Valley State 14 - Damion May threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more TDs as Alabama A&M (3-4, 3-1) routed Mississippi Valley State (1-5, 1-2). Mississippi Valley State's rushing woes continue - they had minus-27 yards rushing on the day. They did have 313 yards passing - Christopher Few threw for 179 yards and a touchdown while Dewayne Betts threw for 134 yards.
Alabama State 23, Texas Southern 16 - A week after Brian Jenkins was fired as football coach at Alabama State (1-5, 1-2), the Hornets got their first win of the season as they scored 20 unanswered points on Texas Southern (0-6, 0-2). Interim coach Donald Hill-Eley saw his team erase a late second quarter 16-3 deficit with two Darryl Pearson touchdown passes and two Hunter Hanson field goals. Dominick DeLira led Texas Southern with 175 yards and two touchdowns passing.
CENTRAL INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Fayetteville State 41, Johnson C. Smith 16 - Stevie Green rushed for 120 yards and three touchdowns to lead Fayetteville State (3-4, 2-2) to a win over Johnson C. Smith (0-7, 0-4)).
Of FSU's 388 yards of offense, 241 of it came on the ground. Donshel Jetton ran for 63 yards and two touchdowns for the Broncos. Johnson C. Smith was led by Harold Herbin and his 49 yards and a touchdown rushing and David Francis who had nine tackles.
Shaw 35, Livingstone 14 - A three-touchdown second quarter pushed Shaw (2-4, 1-3) out far enough for a comfortable win over Livingstone (0-6, 0-3). Daron Downing threw for 183 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score to lead Shaw. Thaddeus Bell threw for 173 yards and a touchdown and caught a TD to lead Livingstone.
St. Augustine's 17, Winston-Salem State 14 - Sam Boyd's 9-yard touchdown reception with 29 seconds left gave St. Augustine's (3-4, 3-1) the upset win over Winston-Salem State (4-3, 2-2). Kerrion Moore's 7-yard TD run midway through the 3rd quarter gave WSSU their first lead at 14-7. But a Sean Smith 30-yard field goal and then Boyd's TD catch from Demetrius Lewis late gave SAU the win. WSSU only had four drives after their third quarter TD, and only one of them were more than four plays. WSSU outgained SAU 304 to 248, but St. Augustine's defense stood up late. Lewis threw one TD while Darryl Johnson threw another, with Boyd catching both of them.
Virginia Union 35, Chowan 10 - Virginia Union (5-2, 4-0) got their fourth win in a row as Darius Taylor threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Eric Caldwell also threw two TD passes for VUU. Jaiden Reavus had a huge day as he caught three of those touchdown passes in catching five balls for 129 yards. Chowan (2-5, 2-2) was led by Bryce Witt and his 238 yards passing and a great day by Tyrell Freeman who rushed for 185 yards.
Elizabeth City State 56, Lincoln (Pa) 18 - Victor Greene had three first half touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving, to help Elizabeth City State (4-3, 2-2) jump out to a big halftime lead that Lincoln (Pa) (0-7, 0-4) couldn't overcome. Daquan Neal threw for 204 yards with four touchdown passes while also leading ECSU in rushing with 89 yards and a TD. Carlos Croslin led Lincoln with 88 yards and a TD rushing. Trey McCullom threw for 178 yards and a touchdown.

West Virginia State 47, Concord 29 - West Virginia State (4-3, 3-3) jumped out to a 33-7 lead and never looked back in defeating Concord (1-6, 1-6). Matt Kinnick threw for 231 yards and a touchdeown and caught a 27-yard TD pass. Juwan Etheridge rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Concord was led by Adam Fulton who passed for 193 yards and three touchdowns.
Shippensburg 56, Cheyney 0 - The Shippensburg (6-1, 3-1) running game accounted for 273 yards and seven touchdowns as the Raiders routed Cheyney (1-6, 0-4). London Whitfield rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns, Cole Chiappialle had 48 yards and three TDs, and Cole McDermott had 39 yards and two touchdowns for Shippensburg. Cheyney had a miserable day on offense, gaining only two first downs, had minus-23 yards rushing and just 20 yards passing for a grand total of minus-3 yards of total offense. Samuel Anojulu and Esaie Batoula both had seven tackles for Cheyney.
Missouri S&T 37, Lincoln (Mo) 3 - Missouri S&T (5-2, 3-0) won their fifth-straight game by limiting Lincoln (Mo) (1-5, 0-3) to nine yards rushing. The Miners' balanced attack was led by DeShawn Jones who rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, Tyler Swart threw for 175 yards and another touchdown. D'Luis West also ran for two touchdowns. Lincoln (Mo) was led by Drake Davidson who threw for 190 yards. Willard Cotton had 11 tackles and a sack for Lincoln.
Webber International 16, Edward Waters 9 - Webber International (3-3, 1-1) got their first Sun Conference win without scoring an offensive point againt Edward Waters (0-6, 0-2). Marcus Mannerstedt kicked three field goals and Jaylen Cayo recovered an EWC fumble in the end zone. Garry Choulotte threw for 134 yards - though he was sacked three times - and rushed for 33 yards for Webber International. Edward Waters was led by Christian Hayes who ran for 97 yards and a touchdown and threw for 89 yards.
Langston 44, Texas College 17 - The NAIA's eighth best team, Langston (6-0, 4-0) stayed undefeated by getting three late touchdowns to pull away for the win over Texas College (1-6, 1-4). Texas College was close, 23-17, in the third quarter after Vontyne Williams 43-yard TD run. But Milton Harper threw a late third quarter TD for Langston and then Jaylen Lowe threw a TD pass and ran for another to lead Langston to the win. Tim Whitifeld rand for 175 yards and two touchdowns for Langston.
