Amir Hall threw two first half touchdown passes as Bowie State held off Chowan 21-14 Thursday in a battle of two of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's better teams so far this season.
Chowan's Edwin Thomas muffed a punt in the first quarter and two plays later, Hall threw a 10-yard
TD pass to Jordan Garrison . Hall added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Deron Smith in the second quarter while Brandon Abrams added a short touchdown run to give Bowie State (4-2, 3-0 CIAA) a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Chowan (4-2, 2-1 CIAA) didn't allow Bowie State to score again and got then got a 39-yard Randall Dixon touchdown pass just before halftime and then a 36-yarder midway through the fourth quarter to pull within seven. Chowan got one more chance late in the fourth quarter but the Bowie State defense held as the Hawks could only reach midfield.
Chowan actually outgained Bowie State 370 yards to 269. Chowan also had nine penalties for 133 yards. Bowie State also converted an Edwin Thomas first quarter fumble into a touchdown for their first score.
Tyree Lee had a big night on the ground for Chowan as he rushed for 158 yards on 30 carries.
