Tuskegee and Tennessee State Take Over the Top Spots in This Week's ADD'S HBCU SPORTS REPORT Football FCS/Division II Top Ten Lists

By ADD SEYMOUR JR.

There were some huge wins by HBCU football teams this past weekend, and those are reflected in this week's ADD'S HBCU SPORTS REPORT FCS/Division II Football Top Ten Lists.

Tennessee State (1-0) shocked FBS Georgia State on a night in Atlanta when Georgia State was opening their new football stadium and enjoying the debut of their new head coach.  But Tennessee State, one of the top 25 FCS football teams in the country, played tough defense and rode the legs of quarterback Treon Harris and running back Seth Rowland to claim the win and take over the top spot in our FCS poll this week.

North Carolina A&T (1-0) had no problem with Gardner-Webb while Grambling (0-1) couldn't get anything going against FBS Tulane in a Louisiana battle.  But it's Howard (1-0), now ranked eighth in our FCS Top Ten, who had the biggest win of all - actually the biggest college football upset based on point spread (they were 45-point underdogs) of all time when they defeated FBS UNLV.  The Runnin' Rebels got a big dose of Howard quarterback Caylin Newton who had more than 300 yards of offense for the Bison.

In Division II, Tuskegee (1-0) was breaking a new quarterback, but the Golden Tigers were able to shut down FCS Alabama State Saturday to claim the top spot on our list.  Not far behind are Winston-Salem State (1-0) and Bowie State (1-0), the CIAA's two top teams.  Both got big wins Saturday and will face each other this weekend.  WSSU beat Bowie State in the CIAA championship game last season.

No. 4 Albany State (1-0) knocked off perennial Division II power Valdosta State Saturday and now will take on top-ranked Tuskegee in a huge game this weekend.
